LGBTIQ* and the police
Distrust of the police has its reasons. That’s why Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Bremen and Lower Saxony have dedicated liaison officers for queer people.
State Police and velspol: together against hate crime
On 8 April 2025, the Schleswig-Holstein State Police and velspol Schleswig-Holstein e.V. sealed their cooperation in the “STOP the HATE” campaign with a cooperation agreement. It was signed by State Police Director Dr. Maren Freyher and the velspol board.

LGBTIQ* contact point of the State Police
The contact point has existed since 2018 and was set up on the initiative of velspol Schleswig-Holstein e.V. The central contact point is headed by Susann Abraham. Every police directorate has LGBTIQ* liaison officers you can turn to, including with sensitive matters. The central contact point arranges an appointment near you, by phone or email.

Cops4Q: police liaison officers
The liaison officers are the link between the police and the community. You can ask general questions or file a police report. If you wish, they can refer you to Hamburg’s support and counselling network, even without a report.

Bremen
LGBTIQ* police liaison officer
Hate crime has no place in Bremen. The Bremen Police has a liaison officer specifically for the queer community: Julia Koopmann (she/her). She advises on police matters relating to LGBTIQ* issues and, if needed, refers you to counselling services and support networks. Within the police, she raises awareness of LGBTIQ* topics.

LGBTIQ state coordination office
The Lower Saxony Police has liaison officers for the queer community across the state. They are coordinated by Leon Dietrich, the LGBTIQ state coordinator. The team gives confidential advice, supports you in reporting a crime and refers you to counselling services offering legal or psychological help.

Were you treated disrespectfully by the police, not taken seriously as a queer person, or did you hear derogatory remarks? Then you can and should make a complaint.
How a complaint works

You or witnesses can contact any police directorate, the police commissioner or the complaints office.

Forwarding
Wherever you turn, your concern will be forwarded to the right office.

Outcome
You have the right to be informed of the outcome of the disciplinary investigation.
There is no deadline. It’s best to get in touch promptly.
